Inlsee Stands with Planned Parenthood, Condemns “Extremist” Critics

It has been a bad month for Planned Parenthood. With the release of their fourth video today, the Center for Medical Progress continues to expose the reality of what the abortion industry is.

But one friend they have not lost is Washington’s Governor Jay Inslee.

In response to a request from seven state legislators calling on him to stop public funding to Planned Parenthood, Governor Inslee released the following statement:

“Planned Parenthood provides millions of women across the country access to a full range of affordable health care and family planning services. National extremist organizations are engaged in a concerted effort to discredit, and ultimately eliminate, an organization that so many women rely on.

“Here in Washington State, where we have long fought to protect women’s access to family planning services, Planned Parenthood is on the front lines of women’s health care. I stand with them in their efforts to ensure every woman needing access to safe and legal reproductive health care can get it.”

Gov. Inslee can’t even bring himself to acknowledge that the allegations are troubling.

No statement about the need to wait for all the facts to come in before rushing to judgment. Just an unambiguous defense.

He insults the intelligence of every woman in America by acting as if they are unable to distinguish between real women’s health care and financially profiting from the organs of babies that have been recently killed.

He is not outraged by what the videos reveal but by the fact that they were ever made.

One video at a time, the Center for Medical Progress is shocking the nation’s conscience. They are exposing the cavalier way in which Planned Parenthood executives negotiate the sale of body parts.

But some of us may no longer have a conscience.

In the video released today, one Planned Parenthood medical assistant declared, “And, another boy!” while sifting through the remains to assess the usefulness of the babies’ organs.

Not even Planned Parenthood is able to defend themselves. Their response to the videos has been to tell their friends in the media not to share the videos.

That’s not how you behave if you’re proud of what you do.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), a member of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus and sponsor of numerous abortion bills resorted to the “but it’s legal” defense. She said, “Planned Parenthood is actually allowed, is my understanding, for scientific research, to use fetal tissue and that is not illegal”.

If your best defense of your behavior is “it’s not illegal” you’re admitting that it’s wrong.

In an environment when many of the most pro-abortion leaders in the country can’t bring themselves to defend the indefensible, Governor Inslee walks out onto the fringe of the fringe by making an unqualified defense of Planned Parenthood and his desire to send them more of your money.

And he thinks you’re the extremist.

If you would like to share your thoughts with Governor Inslee on this issue, you can call him at 360-902-4111 or email him by clicking here.

You can email your legislators and tell them to stop public funding of Planned Parenthood by clicking here.

After you’ve done that, please share this with friends who want to be part of the solution. We are the solution.

Legislators Ask Attorney General to Investigate Planned Parenthood

Last week, seven legislators sent a letter to Governor Inslee demanding that Washington State stop funding Planned Parenthood. Since then, 34 legislators have sent a letter to Attorney General Bob Ferguson requesting him to investigate whether Planned Parenthood in Washington has been selling organs from aborted babies for financial gain.  You can read the letter and see who signed it below.

If your legislators signed this letter, let them know you appreciate their efforts to investigate Planned Parenthood. If your legislators did not sign the letter, call the legislative hotline at 1-800-562-6000 or email them here and ask them to join their colleagues in compelling the Governor and Attorney General to investigate and stop funding Planned Parenthood.

Then call Attorney General Ferguson’s office at 360-753-6200 and ask him to investigate Planned Parenthood. Be respectful, but please be heard.

WA Pharmacy, Pharmacists Will Appeal 9th Cir. Ruling that Forces Them to Violate Their Beliefs

The following quote may be attributed to Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Vice President of Legal Services Kristen Waggoner regarding the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit’s decision Thursday in Stormans v. Wiesman to uphold Washington Board of Pharmacy rules that force pharmacists to dispense drugs contrary to their conscience instead of allowing them to refer customers to other pharmacists as they are allowed to do in all 49 other states:

“No one should be forced to choose between their religious convictions and their family businesses and livelihoods, particularly when the state allows referrals for just about any other reason. The premier medical and pharmaceutical associations all support the right of a provider to refer patients, and all other states allow such referrals. This decision will affect many facilities within the state, including Catholic hospitals and pharmacies, which have made clear they will not dispense these drugs. As the district court noted, drugs like Plan B and ella are widely accessible within the state. In fact, no woman anywhere in Washington has been denied timely access to these drugs for religious reasons. We will appeal this ruling.”

The following quote may be attributed to Stormans, Inc., President Kevin Stormans regarding the 9th Circuit’s decision:

“The state allows pharmacies to refer for all kinds of reasons. In practice, it only bans religiously motivated referrals. With 33 pharmacies stocking the drug within five miles of our store, it is extremely disappointing that the court and the state demand that we violate our conscience or lose our family business. All we are asking is to be able to live out the beliefs that we hold, as Americans have always been able to do, and to be able to refer patients for religious reasons, as the medical and pharmaceutical associations overwhelmingly recommend.”

3 Ways to Help Defund Planned Parenthood

In the last two weeks, Center for Medical Progress released two videos online showing Planned Parenthood staff members discussing the sale of body parts from aborted babies. The videos were filmed undercover and have since received over 3 million views (combined views for both videos). The videos include Planned Parenthood Uses Partial-Birth Abortions to Sell Baby Parts (click here to watch the unedited version) and Second Planned Parenthood Senior Executive Haggles Over Baby Parts Prices, Changes Abortion Method (click here to watch the unedited version).

Since being released, these videos have ignited a national debate about the taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood. In response to the videos, some states have defunded Planned Parenthood and others have launched investigations into Planned Parenthood. Washington State is not one of them.

Here are three things you can do to help the effort to stop public funding of Planned Parenthood:

1.  Attend a rally Tuesday the 28th to defund Planned Parenthood

A series of “Women Betrayed Rallies” are being formed across the nation in order to send a very loud and clear message to lawmakers, both on a state and federal level, that we do not want our tax dollars to fund Planned Parenthood. In Washington State, Women Betrayed Rallies will be held this TUESDAY, JULY 28, at the following locations and times:

Planned Parenthood Office
2001 E Madison St, Seattle, WA 98122

Esther Short Park
Downtown Vancouver

Use these flyers to invite pro-life friends and family to attend the rally with you (Seattle rally & Vancouver rally).

2.  Ask your legislators not to send tax dollars to Planned Parenthood

To date, only seven Washington State Lawmakers have called upon Washington State Governor Jay Inslee to pull funding from Planned Parenthood. Is your legislator one of the seven who has made that call? If so, thank each for their efforts to end Planned Parenthood funding in Washington State.

Please also call, email, or visit your state legislators who aren’t among these seven, and ask them to join their colleagues in compelling Governor Inslee to investigate and defund Planned Parenthood (if you need talking points, click here). Please contact if you need assistance with reaching out to your legislators.

3.  Tell Governor Inslee to stop public funding of Planned Parenthood

It’s true that Governor Inslee has been a strong ally of the abortion industry.  But a flood of messages from citizens respectfully asking him to stop sending their money to organizations that harvest the organs of babies will touch the conscience if nothing else.  Remember, if they don’t hear from you, they think you don’t care.  So call the Governor’s Office at 360-902-4111 or send him a message here.

But only call if you can be respectful.  Otherwise, we hurt the effort by creating more hostility.  When it comes to life, this is one area in which love really does win.

41 Companies that Give Money to Planned Parenthood

Revelations about the harvesting of organs from babies by Planned Parenthood have sparked calls to end public funding of Planned Parenthood. In 2013, Planned Parenthood received more than $540 million from government sources.

Fewer people know that 25% of Planned Parenthood’s annual revenues come from private donations and include donations from some of America’s biggest companies. 2nd Vote is an app that helps conservatives know which causes different companies support so they can make conscientious purchasing decisions.

Here are the 41 companies support Planned Parenthood:

Legislators Demand Gov. Inlee Stop Funding Planned Parenthood

In response to videos recently released by the Center for Medical Progress in which Planned Parenthood executives discussed the harvesting and sale of organs taken from aborted babies, seven Washington State legislators have called on Gov. Jay Inslee to cease state funding of Planned Parenthood.

The letter states that the current Washington State budget will spend send more than $50 million in state and federal money to Planned Parenthood.

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas and Governor Bobby Jindal of Louisiana have opened investigations into Planned Parenthood’s operations.

The letter was signed by Representatives David V. Taylor, Graham Hunt, Jesse Young, Elizabeth Scott, Matt Shea, Brad Klippert, and Gina McCabe.

Planned Parenthood Caught Selling Body Parts

They claim to be advocates for women.

But in a video released today, Planned Parenthood’s Senior Director of Medical Services, Dr. Deborah Nucatola, describes how Planned Parenthood sells the body parts of baby girls for $30 to $100 per specimen.

In the video, Nucatola explains the expertise they’ve developed at harvesting specific body parts. “We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that, so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.”

She even explains how different techniques are used to harvest the parts of the body in greatest demand.

“I’d say a lot of people want liver. And for that reason, most providers will do this case under ultrasound guidance, so they’ll know where they’re putting their forceps. The kind of rate-limiting step of the procedure is calvarium. Calvarium — the head — is basically the biggest part.”

This isn’t a rogue Planned Parenthood employee who has gone off script, this is the Senior Director of Medical Services for the entire country.

In case you were wondering, it is illegal to sell the parts of aborted babies. It is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.” (42. U.S. C 289g-2)

As troubling as this video is, it is simply the latest in a long list of troubling revelations about the nation’s largest provider of abortions.

Planned Parenthood employees have been documented assisting in the sex-trafficking of children, concealing rape (here, here, here, and here), and receiving contributions to abort black babies.

Despite these facts, Planned Parenthood continues to receive more than $20 million a year from the state of Washington. In the recently concluded legislative session, the House of Representatives attempt to increase government funding for Planned Parenthood was stopped in the Senate.

In 2013, Planned Parenthood received more than $540 million from the federal government.

Call your state legislators and members of Congress and tell them to stop funding Planned Parenthood.  You can call your state legislators at the Legislative Hotline 1-800-562-6000Then send them an email with this information and ask them, in light of these facts, what their position on taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood is.

Then, schedule a meeting with them in person, present them with this information, and ask them the same question.

Politicians are busy people who are inundated with information. They need to be educated.

Some politicians will remain willfully ignorant of stories like these because it puts them in a politically challenging situation. But that’s their problem, not yours. Don’t let them dodge the issue. Too much is at stake.

What we are seeing in this video is the natural progression of the ethic of abortion.

History has repeatedly shown that the only way to deny someone else’s humanity is to behave inhumanely.

William Wilberforce helped to end the slave trade in England because he exposed the social elites, against their will, to the realities of the slave trade.

Many still chose to defend the indefensible, but others could not. And eventually, the slave trade was abolished.

We have the same opportunity today.

Be respectful, but for the sake of those whose lives literally hang in the balance, don’t be shy.

Session Summary: What You Accomplished

On Monday, the Washington State Legislature passed a budget and the Governor signed it last night. This will be the end of the Legislature’s third special session.

We want to thank you for all your help calling, emailing, and visiting your legislators! There were numerous bills that you helped make a difference on. With your help:

  • A bill to facilitate the use of telemedicine was changed to prevent it from being used for webcam abortions
  • Parental notification for abortions was moved through the legislature the furthest in years
  • The Abortion Insurance Mandate was killed for the fourth year in a row
  • Parents still have a choice on whether their children receive immunizations or not
  • A bill to ban therapy that would help minors with unwanted same-sex attraction was defeated

Listed are some highlights of what was in the budget and also a summary of the bills we worked on this past session.

A two-year $38.2 billion operating budget was passed to avoid a government shut-down. The House passed it 90-8, while the Senate passed it 38-10.

Budget Highlight: Funding for Abortions and Contraceptives for Illegal Immigrants
The abortion industry attempted to increase revenues by expanding a state program called Take Charge to illegal immigrants. The reasoning is if there are less babies being born, the State can save money on illegal immigrants’ “prenatal, birth, and postpartum services and medical coverage for newborns.” Read more here. However, this proposal was defeated in final budget negotiations.

Budget Lowlight: Funding for Planned Parenthood
While Planned Parenthood was not successful in their legislative policy priorities, they will continue to receive more than $20 million each year from Washington taxpayers. Although Planned Parenthood does not explicitly receive money in the budget, “family planning” is the term the government uses to describe the area where they allocate our tax dollars to pay for abortion and contraception.

Planned Parenthood will still receive money from the state, however, as noted above, they were not successful in their legislative policy priorities. Thanks to the help of citizens all over the state, pro-life legislation made significant progress than in previous years and bad bills were once again killed before making it to the Governor’s office. Here are some of our collective legislative successes:

PASSED: SB 5175: Telemedicine & Webcam Abortions
This bill dealt with telemedicine and was defeated in the Senate last year after being approved by the House because of concerns that it would make it possible for telemedicine to be used to remotely prescribe chemical abortions.  This is especially problematic in a state like Washington that does not require parental notification for abortions. However, the version signed by the Governor limited the application of the bill to “essential benefits” under the Affordable Care Act, which excludes abortions.

SB 5289: Parental Notification for Abortion
If passed, this bill would have required a 48 hour notice be given to parents before an abortion could be performed on a minor. This bill advanced in the legislative process the furthest is has in years! It received a hearing, was voted out of committee, and was moved all the way up to the Rules Committee.

Because of your help, these bad bills did NOT become law:

HB 1647: Abortion Insurance Mandate
This would have required all insurance providers to provide abortion insurance coverage. Pro-life business owners would have no choice but to provide abortion insurance for their employees. Every business, regardless of their religious convictions, would be required to subsidize abortions by paying for abortion coverage.

This is the fourth year that the legislature has tried to pass the Abortion Insurance Mandate and it was the fourth year it died before making it out of the House.

HB 2009: Immunization Exemptions
Current law allows children to be exempted from the immunization requirements for health reasons, religious reasons, or for the personal objection of the parents. This bill would have eliminated the personal objection exemption, which is cited in 70% of the cases in which exemptions are granted.

This bill was threatening to take away a parent’s right to chose what they thought was best for their children.  With support from parents across the state, this bill never made it out of committee.

SB 5870: Regarding Aversive Therapies
This bill banned licensed therapists from providing sexual orientation change efforts (SOCE) for minors. It banned aversion therapy, which included ice baths and shock therapy (which we are all opposed to), but also talk therapy. Under this bill, minors would not have received help from therapists, even if the minor and the parents of the minor agreed that they wanted it, and it was in the best interest of the minor to get the therapy.

The Senate passed a version of this bill that would ban ice baths but still protect free speech. The House changed it to ban all forms of SOCE. Your taking action on this bill stopped the Senate from passing the version that limited free speech while protecting minors from abuse.

These are just some of the bills that we worked on this session, but the success of them passing or failing to pass is credited to you. This progress could not have been possible without your participation and your prayers. Thank you for making a difference!

WA House Proposes Saving Money by Eliminating Children of Illegal Immigrants

The Washington State Legislature is at a stand-off.

The State Senate, controlled by the Republican-lead Majority Coalition Caucus, believes the projected $1.9 billion in new revenue from existing taxes is sufficient to fund state operations.  However, the state House, controlled by the Democrats, has been seeking $1.5 billion in new taxes to fund the budget they favor.

In recent years, the Washington State Legislature has gone into extra sessions to pass a budget when there were multi-billion reductions in state revenue and when there were multi-billion increases.

Buried in the weeds of the current stalemate is a unique, yet offensive, House budget proposal that seeks to save money by reducing the number of babies born to illegal immigrants.

The proposal would make illegal immigrants eligible for a program called “Take Charge”, which funds contraceptives and abortion.  The program estimates that it will enroll 12,000 illegal immigrants who are not currently part of the program.

According to the House Budget, “Savings will be achieved by preventing unwanted pregnancies that generate state costs for prenatal, birth, and postpartum services and for medical coverage of newborns.  These women are eligible for state medical assistance upon pregnancy and their children are eligible for continued coverage.”

The proposal is troubling because the racial implications are unavoidable. “We hope there will be less of you.”

Family Planning Budget Item Edited (1)

The proposal also seems to contradict the spirit of the recently passed REAL Hope Act in which the Washington State legislature made government funding for higher education available to students who came to the country illegally.

Regardless of how we feel about public funding of education for non-citizens, we should be able to agree that, “Get an education, just don’t have any babies” is wrong.

This proposal is not part of the Senate budget and in light of the significant differences on the size of the budget, it is unknown how big of a sticking point this particular item is.

Still, as the country clamors for racial reconciliation in the wake of the tragic shooting in Charleston, the implication that leadership in the House of Representatives is hoping to reduce the number of babies with brown skin is beyond concerning.

Targeting the immigrant community with schemes for population control needs to be condemned in the strongest way.

Racial considerations aside, the strategy of saving money by reducing the number of people is certain to fail if implemented.  Yes, people have created lots of problems.  But people have always been the solution to our problems as well.

People are good.

Babies are really good.

Even if their parents aren’t rich, aren’t white, and weren’t born here.

The legislature has until the end of June to pass a budget before some government services will be shut down.  Call the Legislative Hotline at 1-800-562-6000 to share your thoughts with your legislators or you can email them by clicking here.

Always be respectful and courteous, but always be heard.

Forcing Hospitals to Perform Abortions

Debates over abortion aren’t really news these days. It’s one of those debates that never really goes away.

However, the debate is changing.

In Port Townsend, Washington, the debate is around whether the hospital that serves that community can be compelled to perform abortions.

In February, the Seattle office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sent a letter to Jefferson Healthcare claiming that the East Jefferson County Hospital is out of compliance with the state Reproductive Privacy Act by not offering to abortions on the premises.

That same month, the ACLU sued Skagit Regional Health claiming that the hospital violated law by referring those seeking an abortion to the local Planned Parenthood affiliate rather than provide the abortions themselves.

These lawsuits and threats rely upon a 2013 opinion from Attorney General Bob Ferguson regarding the Reproductive Privacy Act, passed by voters in 1991. That Reproductive Privacy Act states that there is a “fundamental right to choose or refuse” birth control or abortion and prohibits the state from discriminating through “regulation or provision of benefits, facilities, services or information.”

While no other Attorney General or judge has taken this position in 22 years, Mr. Ferguson declared that it is now illegal for a public hospital not to provide abortions.

There are many reasons rural hospitals might not provide abortions (or other services) that have nothing do with philosophical opposition to abortion.

Rural hospitals don’t have the same resources as urban hospitals.

There are undoubtedly many services East Jefferson County Hospital doesn’t provide and that isn’t because they hate people who need heart surgery or have Ebola.

It is common for one provider to refer patients to another provider to ensure they are cared for by the person best equipped to handle their situation.

Women will not be better served by forcing people to provide a service when they had previously decided someone else was in a better position to do so.

Those of us who have spent significant amounts of time in rural communities have all had the experience of having to travel out of the area for particularized care. It’s one of the trade-offs for not having to sit in traffic for two hours every day.

Only abortion industry advocates consider that to be a legal problem.

Still, this case illustrates how the abortion debate in Washington has changed.

Even before Roe v. Wade, Washington State has made abortion available to women at taxpayer’s expense. The abortion industry gives Washington State an A+ rating.

Washington is an abortionist’s paradise.

But they still aren’t content.

The new frontier in abortion advocacy is forcing other people to be part of their “private” decision to have an abortion.

As a result, now you can get sued for helping a woman find someone who will provide an abortion because that’s just not enough.

You should have done it yourself.

For four years in a row, the Washington State House of Representatives has passed legislation that would require every private insurance policy to cover abortion.

The State of Washington has been trying to force pharmacists in Olympia to sell Plan B, a drug they object to because they believe it causes an early term abortion, since 2007.

The harassment of a rural hospital is just the latest front in their war against choice.

It’s the new debate that doesn’t focus on whether abortion should be legal, but focuses on whether you should be free to make decisions based on the fact that you have a different view.

If you live in Jefferson County, you can contact the commissioners of the Jefferson County Public Hospital District here:

The ACLU has also sent letters to the Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville and Mason General Hospital in Shelton. If you live in those areas, contact your local hospital boards as well.

Feel free to call Bob Ferguson at 360-753-6200 and share your thoughts.

Be cheerful, but be heard.
