Here is a sample letter that you can write and send to your local union that will exempt you out from paying union dues to support both their organization and their social agenda.

Dear (NAME OF PRESIDENT OF UNION):

For a (NUMBER OF YEARS/TIME WORKED) I have been a member of (THE UNION NAME AND LOCAL #). My understanding of the Bible and the teachings of my church forbid me from being involved or supporting this union. It is now my sincere religious conviction that I can no longer maintain my membership in or financially support this labor organization. My religious convictions are based on principles I have found in God’s Word and as taught by my church.

I am requesting, based on my religious belief, that (NAME OF UNION) make accommodation for my religious observance, practice, and belief, as provided for in Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and as amended 1972, and by the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission guidelines. These statutory exemptions are reinforced by the National Labor Relations Act and the Public Employment Relations Commission of Washington State.

In accordance with state and federal law, I will be glad to pay the equivalent of my union dues and fees to a non-labor, non-religious charity of my choice and present proof of payment to these charities per the request of union officials.

I request that this be initiated immediately in lieu of requiring me to be a dues-paying union member or to tender my dues under an agency shop provision. I am not authorizing a check-off of my dues.
