The Family Policy Institute of Washington is pleased to present the Washington Family Health Index (WFHI) 2009. The WFHI exists to provide a comprehensive view of family health in Washington State. The WFHI tracks Washington-specific indicators of family health and stability by compiling the best social science data available. The purpose of this effort is to create awareness of trends related to the family so that policy makers and other community leaders will have an improved understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of Washington state’s families when creating public policy. The WFHI tracks five categories of family health: (1) family structure; (2) economic stability; (3) physical and mental health; (4) education; (5) and family safety. We have chosen these specific indicators because we believe that a strong society needs lasting marriages, comprised of economically and mentally stable individuals who value children and lead them to social and academic success.
