2SHB 1762

Increasing parental and community involvement in public education.

Description
House Bill 1762, which increases the parental and community involvement in public education, declares that “parents and guardians are their children’s first and best teachers” and that children’s education is best served when parents and teachers partner together. School districts will be required to annually inform parents of their rights, which include receiving timely answers to questions, regular information on school tests and activities, encouragement to be involved, and the right to inspect all school policies.

Why this is important to us: In the wake of news stories on several schools’ disregard of parents’ wishes concerning their child’s education, this bill would ensure that Washington schools work with, rather than against, parents.
